PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a fluid comprised of components in your blood. Because of its healing and regeneration properties and its low risk of side effects, an increasing number of men and women are opting for PRP as part of their aesthetic treatments.

PRP consists of two components that work together to make it an effective injectable. It contains:

Plasma

Plasma is the runny yellowish liquid that makes up the base of your blood. Blood cells are suspended in the plasma and can flow freely through your vessels because of it.

Blood platelets

Platelets are an integral part of your body’s healing process. They clot together when you sustain an injury to prevent bleeding and release growth factors for tissue regeneration. They also signal each other to work together and speed up healing. PRP allows you to inject a concentrated number of platelets for targeted cell regeneration.

Where does PRP come from?

You might wonder where the PRP for your treatment comes from and how Dr. O’Connell separates it from a complete sample of blood. To get PRP, you must remove the red and white blood cells from a blood sample. Dr. O’Connell does so by placing your blood sample into a centrifuge.

A centrifuge is a machine that spins rapidly. The spinning causes your blood to separate into layers. When it comes out of the centrifuge, the bottom layer is full of platelets with a plasma base. Dr. O’Connell separates this layer and prepares it for your treatment.

What can PRP do?

At Laguna Beach Aesthetics, Dr. O’Connell uses PRP for several different treatments available to you. They are:

PRP Hair Restoration

PRP hair restoration may be the treatment for you if you have a bald spot or thinning hair. A series of injections to the scalp encourages growth factor activation near your follicles. The treated follicles produce more and thicker hair.

PRP Vampire Facial

The PRP Vampire Facial is a microneedling treatment with PRP applications across your skin before and after the microneedling takes place. The PRP fuses into the tiny injuries from the needles to reinvigorate your skin. The result is a reduction in scars, sun damage, and fine lines, and an improvement in your skin’s texture.
