Juvederm® – the softest of the hyaluronic acid filler – is derived from a natural substance which is found throughout the human body. Since it is so similar to your own tissue, there is no need for a sensitivity test.
Juvederm® XC is the first and only non-surgical hyaluronic acid (HA) filler FDA-approved to instantly smooth moderate to severe wrinkles around your nose and mouth for up to one year with optimal treatment. Juvederm®XC creates a natural, youthful appearance when injected by a trained professional with an artistic eye. Most experts agree that hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are the products of choice for shaping lips. The gels are created from stabilized HA, which binds with water to add volume and hydration to your skin. They slowly break down and are absorbed by the body naturally. Because HA is a natural substance found in our bodies, no allergy pre-testing is required.
As you age, it’s not just about lines and wrinkles. Your cheeks can lose volume and skin may begin to sag. Juvederm Voluma® XC is the first FDA-approved injectable gel to instantly add volume to your cheek area to correct age-related volume loss. It can provide you contour and a subtle lift for up to two years with optimal treatment. Voluma injections can produce instantly visible improvement to flat and sunken cheeks as the smooth gel gently lifts the cheeks and gives your facial contours an overall rounder and fuller appearance. Voluma includes lidocaine, a local anesthetic that increases your comfort during treatments.
Preparing for Your Treatment
Wash your face thoroughly, removing lipstick and face creams.
Don’t take aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), vitamin E, fish oil, and similar medications for 1 to 2 weeks before your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.
Use Arnica montana (an herbal medicine) the morning of your treatment or immediately after to help reduce bruising and swelling.
Tell Dr. O’Connell before your treatment if you have a history of herpes (cold sores) in this area so she can prescribe a medication that will help prevent an outbreak.
The treatment time can vary, and because Juvederm®XC products contain lidocaine, they are usually painless, however Dr. O’Connell does offer topical anesthesia as well as nerve blocks for improved comfort. Dr. O’Connell will determine whether you’ll need 1 or more syringes to create the results you want. After 4 to 8 weeks, you may need a touch-up treatment to fine-tune your results and produce longer lasting improvement. Results typically last between 6 and 12 months but can be touched up sooner if you like.
Some common, temporary reactions might occur after your treatment, including tenderness, redness, itching, bruising, bumps, pain or swelling. These conditions, if they occur, are usually gone within a few days. After lip injections, they might last 7 to 10 days. We recommend planning your treatments at least 1-2 weeks before any special events. Some minor swelling can sometimes persist up to several weeks after your treatment. This type of swelling only enhances your results by filling in the wrinkles and lips a little more than the product does. When the swelling completely disappears you may think the effect is fading, but it’s the swelling that has disappeared. If you preferred how you looked with a little swelling, we can add more filler at a subsequent appointment.
Applying cold packs to your face and taking Arnica montana for 1 to 2 days will help with bruising and swelling. You should avoid putting pressure on the treated areas for several hours as this could displace the filler. We also recommend using an extra pillow and sleeping on your back the first night for best results.
